What I believe

I believe most of the rainbows I see are signs.

I believe St. Anthony helps me find things.

I believe my 2008 will make beautiful sense to me one day.

I believe I must be where I'm supposed to be because here I am.

I believe the man who was supposed to win the election won the election.

What do you believe?

Republicans I love, I don't want to hear it.

I have a question (and it's an honest question - no sarcasm) - one of the definitions of liberalism is freedom of thought and freedom of speech - yet most liberals I know, as you put it, "don't want to hear it" - so I am confused - isn't "hearing it" or "speaking it" one of the cores of liberalism??

With victory come the spoils so enjoy. After coaching 600+ basketball games even I know that you can't win them all. I will take some joy in knowing that us few republicans get to sit back and watch the show.

Beth - When I say I don't want to hear it, I mean, on the day after he gets elected, I don't want to hear all the things I'm going to hear for the next four years from every Republican I know. It means today, for just one day, I don't want to hear my taxes this, socialized medicine that. It means don't rain on my damn parade the day the parade starts. It means start bitching when he actually does something you don't like, not before. It means give him a friggin' chance to screw up before you start complaining about him screwing up. It means it's more rational, logical to be depressed about what Bush has ALREADY done than what Obama MAY do one day. It means this blog, unlike our country, is not a democracy and I'll never pretend that it is.

Ok, seriously, Beth and Zeb, which part of I DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT did you not get?

Anonymous said...

Wow, are you angry, or what??

Nicole said...

Cy - Not at all. Beth has been a friend for my whole life, so we're kind of like sisters and Zeb is my brother. We're family, we bicker sometimes.

First I thought I was more than civil in my comments.
Second if you really don't want comments then you should not have added that line and you know it.

Nicole said...

Zeb - you were civil but you just couldn't help yourself, could you? As for my comment, it really wasn't an invite but I knew with a question like What's true for you the republicans wouldn't be able to help themselves.

Nicole - Sorry, didn't mean to get you so angry - it was just a question. Since it's day 2 - I have a question for you - all the liberals I know are saying to give him a chance - and I get that - but in return - did you give GW a chance on day 1 - or would you have given McCain the same chance you ask me to give Obama? Just a question - I am actually interested in hearing your opintion - if the questions gets you upset - then don't answer it. And, Nicole, when you say to Zeb that Republicans just can't help themselves - seriously - Democrats, Liberals - they are just a vocal, if not more vocal than Republicans.

Nicole said...

Beth - I wasn't really mad, just responding to comments I predicted hours before I got them. I knew you'd say something along the lines of what you said and I KNEW Zeb couldn't resist a little tone. As for 8 years ago, I had given birth only a few days before the election - Gabriel was born on Oct 27th, 2000 so I would say I probably did give Bush a chance before I started bitching if only because I wasn't paying attention to anything other than my newborn. The second time around? Absolutely not - because I had seen what the previous 4 years had brought. As for giving McCain a shot, I hope so. Sure Democrats are just as vocal as Republicans, but they're a lot less vocal about it on my blog than the Republicans are!

Thanks for answering. For me, it's not so much about giving him a chance or "complaining about him screwing up" - it's more about I just basically disagree with almost all of his policies and all of his positions on issues. So, it's more of fundamental differences than giving him a chance. You mention taxing - and as far a taxing - I just say look at history - raising taxes can and probably will lead to a second great depression as it did for the original great depresstion. Anyway, that's just my views.

Beth - I don't think you'll be able to find consensus among economists or historians as to the cause of the Great Depression, although most would probably agree that there were multiple causes - bank failures, debt, trade issues, over-production, gold standard issues, faulty Federal Reserve politics etc. But I don't think any of them would say it was caused by a tax increase. You tell me to look at history? Take a look there yourself: the US economy is where it is today after 8 years of a President whose party ideals you support and agree with. You may have been happier under such an administration but the economy and millions and millions of Americans are not. Enough already.

I think there was enough blame in the past several years to go around to dems and reps - GW, Barney Frank, Dodd, even Clinton - signing the doc to put mortgages back on the market - so I believe that reps and dems alike share in the blame. On one hand, I am a rep, but I do disagree with GW on many issues. And on the other hand, I feel people are so eager to blame GW for everything, that the dems who screwed up aren't even mentioned. So, both sides have blame.

I believe that rainbows are signs and that St. Anthony helps you find things and that stuffing is delicious and that Barak Obama is going to be a superfantastic president despite the fact that he's got to get the cart out of the ditch and it's a pretty muddy ditch and that his wife is beautiful and that the joy I have been feeling for the last few days is a joy born of all sorts of things, not the least of which is living in a country that is actually capable of looking beyond race to vote for the guy who has the intelligence, will and compassion to do the heavy lifting that this next four years will require.

I also really need to emphasize that I believe stuffing is super delicious. Like, the best thing ever.

Nicole said...

Beth - Of course. Will you say the same thing when you talk about what happens in the country over the next 4 years if something big and bad happens - the shared responsibility of all those involved, not just a president you disagree with?

Lorraine - Ok, see, now I really want some stuffing.

Yes, I would say the same for Obama - I will try to keep an open mind, but I will always remain more consertative in my values. However, not one liberal will say the same for the past 8 years. Obama has the house/senate in his favor - so he will probably get what he wants cause the dems are in charge. If any Reps contribute to things that go wrong then I will fault them too. But NO ONE faults any Past example - the sub prime blow up -Clinton signed the bill to put Mortgages back on the market - thus allowing them to be traded, thus contributing the to sub prime melt down and majorly contributing the the tumbling of the economy; The securitaztion of mortgages is not unique - it's happened 4 other time in the history of this country and every time it ended in a similar fashion but on a smaller scale - except for the great depression of 1929. And despite the fact that outgoing Federal Reserve Treasurer Paul Vulker and (at that time) the new Federal Reserve Treasurer Alan Greenspan BOTH openly told Clinton that signing this bill would lead to a second great depression - but despite that warning, Clinton still signed the bill and appointed Rains to Fannie. Frank Rains then proceeded to run the company into the ground by accepting the sub primes and left the company in his last year with $400 million dollars in compensation. And, under Frank Rains watch Fannie Mae increased it's portfolio from 0% sub prime to 50% sub prime - thus causing the melt down of Fannie Mae which is all publically blamed on Bush? Also, it was Obama's group ACORN that got credit standards lowered so people who really couldn't afford houses were able to get one (a vast majority of which were sub prime mortgages; Also, Democratic Congressman Barney Frank and Todd said - and I quote "everyone, no matter what their income is entitled to own a home" - ok, due to their pressuring and political moves - helped ACORN get credit standards lowered so that everyone can get a home - and they basically set the poor people up for failure in home loans that theywould never be able to pay back? and Yes, although I am not in favor of gov't control, I do think Bush should have appointed someone or a committe to investigate or oversee this process - especially once it was clear that it was going poorly. But, my point is. . .everyone blames Bush and the Bush's failed policies - NO ONE blames any dems adn they had a big part in this too.

Nicole said...

Beth - and this will be the end of this discussion for me, not because it's not interesting but because this isn't the venue for this - do you really think people's gripes with Bush - justified or not - are limited to this economic crisis?

Anonymous said...

I only gave one example - just trying to point out that many hands caused many things - GW may have been one of the hands, but there were other hands too - and on one will even consider the other hands when it comes to blame - but, like you said - this is the end of this conversation.
